You are months into your WorkCover Queensland claim. You have attended every appointment, done every exercise - and you are not confident the treatment is working. Maybe progress has stalled. Maybe the sessions feel rushed or generic. Maybe you simply do not feel heard. And now you are wondering: am I allowed to change physios in the middle of a claim? Will it hurt my claim if I do?

Short answers: yes, you are allowed, and no, changing providers properly will not harm your claim. Here is exactly how to do it.

Your right to choose - at any stage

Under Queensland's workers' compensation scheme, injured workers have the right to choose their own treating providers, including their physiotherapist. That right does not expire once treatment starts. Choosing a provider at the beginning of a claim and changing to a different approved provider partway through are both legitimate exercises of the same right.

What matters is that your new provider is a registered physiotherapist approved with WorkCover Queensland, and that treatment continues to be clinically appropriate for your accepted injury. Beyond that, the choice is yours.

Good reasons to consider a change

  • Progress has plateaued - your measured capacity (or just your function) has not improved in six weeks or more despite consistent attendance.
  • The program never evolves - you are doing the same exercises in month four as week two.
  • Treatment is mostly passive - massage and heat have a role early on, but research supports active, progressive strengthening as the driver of recovery for most work-related musculoskeletal injuries.
  • Nothing is measured - no baseline testing, no re-testing, no objective record of progress.
  • Poor communication - your GP and case manager are not receiving useful reports, and certificate reviews feel disconnected from your treatment.
  • The approach does not fit your job - your role involves heavy manual work but your program never builds towards those demands.

Note what is not on the list: personality clashes alone, or a single frustrating week. Changing providers has a small switching cost - a new assessment, a new relationship - so it is worth doing for the right reasons. But when the reasons are right, staying put out of politeness costs you far more.

How to switch cleanly: a five-step process

  1. Choose your new provider first. Look for a clinic experienced with WorkCover claims, with a structured and measurable approach. Speak to them before you leave your current clinic - a good provider will happily discuss whether their approach suits your injury.
  2. Tell your WorkCover case manager. You do not need permission, but letting your case manager know keeps the claim tidy and ensures treatment approvals transfer to the new provider without confusion.
  3. Ask for your treatment records. Your new provider can request your history from the previous clinic - assessment findings, treatment notes and any measurements. This prevents starting from scratch.
  4. Keep your certificate current. Make sure your work capacity certificate does not lapse during the transition, and let your GP know you have changed rehabilitation providers so their records stay accurate.
  5. Attend your new initial assessment promptly. A gap in treatment is the main thing that genuinely can complicate a claim, so book the new assessment before or immediately after your last session at the old clinic.

Will WorkCover push back?

Changing to another approved provider is a normal event in the life of a claim. Your new provider will conduct their own assessment and submit their treatment plan; approvals for ongoing sessions then run through the usual process, justified by clinical need. Where a change is well-documented - clear handover, no treatment gap, a structured plan from the new provider - there is nothing about switching that undermines your claim.

What switching to OMC looks like

At Optimum Movement Centre in Varsity Lakes, injured workers who join us mid-claim start with a comprehensive assessment, including baseline strength testing on MedX medical equipment where appropriate - we are the only accredited MedX Medical facility in Australia, with machines designed to isolate and measure the strength of injured areas such as the lower back and neck. From there we build a staged, supervised program designed around the demands of your job, re-testing at intervals so your progress is documented at every certificate review.

Administratively, it is simple: we bill WorkCover Queensland directly for approved treatment, we request your records from your previous provider with your consent, and we communicate with your GP and case manager from day one.

The bottom line

Your recovery is the whole point of your claim. If your current rehabilitation is not moving you towards it, Queensland law gives you the right to choose a provider who will - without penalty and without drama.
