If you have been injured at work in Queensland, you have probably been handed a lot of paperwork, given a lot of instructions, and possibly pointed towards a particular doctor or physiotherapy clinic. What many injured workers do not realise is this: in Queensland, you have the right to choose your own treating providers, including your physiotherapist. You are not locked into the clinic your employer or anyone else suggests.
That single piece of information can change the entire course of your recovery. Here is what you need to know.
Your right to choose under the Queensland scheme
Queensland's workers' compensation system is governed by the Workers' Compensation and Rehabilitation Act 2003. Under the scheme, injured workers are entitled to have the cost of reasonable medical treatment and rehabilitation covered - and that includes physiotherapy delivered by a registered physiotherapist who is an approved WorkCover Queensland provider.
Your employer or their insurer may suggest a doctor or clinic, and in some circumstances you may be asked to attend an Independent Medical Examination for assessment purposes. But when it comes to your ongoing treatment - the physiotherapy sessions, the rehabilitation program, the hands-on work of getting you better - the choice of provider sits with you.
This matters because the relationship you have with your treating physiotherapist is one of the most important factors in your recovery. You need someone you trust, someone who listens, and someone whose approach actually suits your injury and your goals.
Why the choice of provider matters so much
Not all rehabilitation is the same. Two clinics can both be registered WorkCover providers and deliver very different experiences. Things worth considering when choosing your physio include:
- Experience with WorkCover claims - a provider who regularly works with injured workers understands work capacity certificates, communication with case managers, and the documentation your claim requires.
- A structured, progressive approach - recovery from a workplace injury usually needs more than passive treatment. Look for a clinic that builds a staged program designed to restore the strength and capacity your job actually demands.
- Objective measurement - programs that measure your strength and function over time give you, your GP and your case manager clear evidence of progress.
- Access to appropriate equipment - some injuries respond best to precisely controlled, medically oriented rehabilitation equipment rather than standard gym machines.
How the process works in practice
Choosing your own physiotherapist on a Queensland WorkCover claim is straightforward:
- See your doctor and obtain a work capacity certificate. Your GP will typically recommend physiotherapy as part of your treatment plan.
- Choose your provider. You can nominate any registered physiotherapist who is an approved WorkCover Queensland provider - you do not have to use a clinic suggested by your employer.
- Provide your claim number. Once your claim is accepted, your physiotherapist can communicate with WorkCover directly.
- Attend your sessions. Approved treatment is billed to WorkCover, and your provider manages requests for further sessions as your program progresses.
At Optimum Movement Centre in Varsity Lakes, we bill WorkCover Queensland directly for approved treatment, which means no out-of-pocket juggling and no waiting on reimbursements for approved sessions. You simply bring your claim details to your first appointment and we handle the rest.
What if you are already seeing someone else?
You can change providers during your claim. If your current treatment has plateaued, or you simply feel the approach is not right for you, you are entitled to move to a different approved provider. It is worth letting your case manager know, and your new provider can request your treatment history so nothing is lost in the transition. We have written a full guide on switching physios mid-claim elsewhere on this site.
